The Catherine Palace is the most gorgeous of all magnificent palaces of St.Petersburg! This palace strikes the imagination by its size, opulence and abundance of gold.

Two great architects – Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli and Charles Cameron - worked at the Catherine Palace. Two architectural styles most famous in St.Petersburg are represented there Elizabethan Baroque and early classical style of Catherine II’s times.

The most famous interiors of the Catherine Palace are:

— The Amber Room – one of the wonders of the world, a room whose walls are covered with natural amber like with wallpaper. You will see the Amber room reconstructed by our restorers, while the mysterious disappearance of the first Amber room still excites people’s minds all over the world.

— The Grand Hall or Throne Hall. The hall is just enormous. Its size is almost 1000 sq.m, and 9 kg of pure gold was required to gild it.

— The Golden Suite of rooms.  The effect produced by these rooms is hard to describe in words… when a tour group leaves the olden Suite of rooms and enters the Green Dining Room, which is the first interior on the route having no gilding, the guide can hear a sigh of relief behind. It’s the full tour group making a breath in or a breath out at once. It’s because the amount of gold which the group has seen on the palace tour is hard to view and almost impossible to apprehend…

— Classical style interiors. They don’t have any gold yet are astonishing due to their unusual and unexpected design.
