About tour
The Russian Museum, as its name suggests, is a depository of Russian fine art – paintings, above all, albeit some scope of plastic arts is also on show. The museum also has a folk art department. That is why we recommend the Russian Museum guided tour primarily to lovers of paintings. At the present time, the Russian Museum is divided into two parts. The Mikhailovsky Palace shows Russian art from the 10th century up to the end of the 19th century. Here you will see a magnificent collection of icons as well as such masterpieces as Carl Brullov’s The Last Day of Pompeii and Barge Haulers on the Volga by Ilya Repin. The building also houses the folk art department. The Benois building shows the late-19th-century and early-20th-century avant-garde art, and art of the 20th century. Displayed here is the superb collection of the Russian avant-garde art including paintings by Kazimir Malevich, Wassily Kandinsky, Mikhail Vrubel, Marc Chagall and Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin. Only one part of the Museum’s display – Mikhailovsky Palace or Benois building - can be visited in one tour of the Russian museum. When booking a tour, please use the field Comments to specify which part of the display is of interest to you.

Russian ballet is primarily a classical ballet that preserves the traditions of the 19th century. This does not mean that we do not have a modern ballet, we have one, and it is a very good modern ballet (for example, the Boris Eifman troupe). But it is classical ballet that is truly unique, because nowhere else in the world is it raised to such a high level.
